Discovering the landscape, flora and fauna
 Walking and hiking

The New Town's determination to protect its natural environment is embodied in a Sensitive Areas Master Plan jointly drawn up by all the municipalities. The aim is sound management of ecological and landscape diversity in the New Town and its environs.

A set of booklets has been published for people wanting to discover the local natural setting. For further information contact "Ville Nouvelle Environnement", rue du Lac, 38092 Villefontaine (Tel. 04.74.94.14.43).

Some sample walks:

The Woodland Walking Trail, Montgeard nature area, municipality of Vaulx Milieu
A walk through the Montgeard woods is the perfect introduction to the area's woodland as a whole: the chance to learn about the life of different trees, their place in the ecosystem, the animal life they provide a home for - and what is being done to ensure sound forest maintenance and management.

The Marshland Walking Trail, La Bourbre nature area, municipalities of St-Quentin Fallavier, Satolas-and-Bonce, Chamagnieu, La Verpillière, Frontonas
Extensively drained by Napoleon I, this marshland area has remained readily accessible. Despite centuries of human intervention, the landscape still has a movingly wild feel to it. Visitors have the chance to meet the 172 species of birds, 20 species of mammals and 18 species of reptiles and amphibians so far identified in the area.

The Orchid Walking Trail, Montgeard nature area, municipality of Vaulx Milieu Montgeard's grasslands are home to a host of different species of plants and flowers. The orchid was chosen as the colourful emblem of this walking trail, so why not come along and see for yourself: the lizard orchid, the bee orchid and many more.
